Traditional Roman moralism remains popular in today鈥檚 America, mostly but not entirely on the political right. Ever hear that the good old days were just a whole lot more virtuous? Feel like you鈥檙e living through the decadent tail end of a culture in terminal decline? Or maybe the rising generation just doesn鈥檛 have what it takes? The Romans felt that way too, and they鈥檇 taken up that belief long before they even had an empire. The Romans felt like they were on the brink of cultural doom for several times longer than we鈥檝e even been around.
