What's New

Now available: login via Google and Apple accounts

We have now fully implemented OAuth across both our iOS and Android apps. So stop worrying about passwords and log in with your Google or Apple IDs on the website or in the Seabird app.

Of course, if you like logging in with an email and password, you can still do that too. We're not monsters.

Introducing Announcements

You're reading one right now! We'll use announcements to share new features and updates. They'll appear on this Announcements page and we'll send you a notification for the really big ones.

Remember, you can always control which notifications you receive — likes, follows, hat tips, and announcements. Head to Settings to customize your notifications.

Public Profiles: now live

Hello, Seabirders! It's true: public profiles are live. This means that you can now link to your profile from other apps or anywhere on the web, making it easier for friends and followers to find and follow you. As an example, check out the official Seabird account here.

If you're a writer sharing original work, you can also link directly to your portfolio of writing across all publications (your SeaVee, as we like to call it).

If you prefer to have your posts viewable only to your approved followers, we have a new option to set your profile to private. Please let us know if you need any assistance. We also have an updated privacy policy, viewable in full or in a plain English summary.

Flock to the new Seabird: Now available on both web and mobile!

We’ve just released our completely rebuilt mobile apps for Android and iOS. Your existing account is ready to work across either mobile app, or on the website.

Among many other improvements and new features, you’ll find better link previews and posting directly from the share menu in mobile apps without having to copy and paste URLs. A new “all” feed shows all posts, making it easier to discover users to follow and more links. And for new users: no more invitation codes! We’ve removed that barrier to signing up so that anyone can join.

Now that Seabird is accessible on the web, next week we will join other platforms in making our content visible to search engines and viewable without logging in. This means you’ll soon be able to share your Seabird profile on other sites, including your portfolio of original writing. If you prefer to have your posts viewable only to your approved followers, we have a new option to set your profile to private. Please let us know if you need any assistance.

Drink from the firehose

Not finding enough great writing in your feed? Explore the new /all feed, which gives you every post on Seabird today. It's a great way to discover new voices beyond those who you follow.

Your profile has a new URL

Your profile is now at seabirdreader.com/u/yourhandle: shorter, shareable, easier to remember. Old profile links will continue to work for now but we will retire them by the end of the year.

Welcome to the new Seabird Web

After an extended hiatus, Seabird Web is back. This was a long time in coming. Special shout out to a Seabird regular, Mort, who helped make it happen.

Give it a try and let us know what you think. And get excited. We've got lots more in store come 2026.

Top Seabird sources of 2024

As we gear up to release our completely new Seabird app, we took a look back at 2024 and the websites shared most often by Seabird users. Our community shared nearly 2000 unique links last year. And while many of those were to popular news publications, well over 100 of them were to sites that appeared only once, an encouraging signal that our users are uncovering lesser known sources.

Below, we sorted through all posts from 2024 to find the favorite publications of Seabird posters. Our writers also linked consistently to their independent work at blogs and newsletters. Thank you to everyone in our online community for sharing their latest writing and the most worthwhile content from around the web!

For readers coming across Seabird for the first time, we are a community dedicated to finding worthwhile writing and other media on the internet: A place for readers to discover, for curators to share, and for writers to feature their latest articles, essays, blog posts, books, and other work. The Seabird app is available for both iOS and Android, with new versions for both coming out very soon. To learn more and request an invitation, visit our site here.

We have lots in store for the year ahead, including improvements to our apps, new invitation systems to bring in more users, and the return of Seabird for web browsers. To our users, thank you for posting throughout the year and building up our community of readers and writers.

Seabird posters shared links to more than 500 different websites last year. Below, we sorted through all posts from 2023 to find the favorite sources of Seabird posters. They include mainstream newspapers like New York Times and Washington Post, regional sources such as Oregon Public Broadcasting and Texas Monthly, and specialized publications like Timothy Lee's newsletter Understanding AI and the nature magazine Hakai. We'd also like to thank our dedicated bloggers and writers who consistently shared their latest work, especially prolific writers Cathy Reisenwitz and Jeremy Horpedahl.
