Help & FAQ

Common questions about using Seabird Reader. See what's new for recent updates.

What is Seabird Reader?
Seabird Reader is a social platform for discovering and sharing quality writing. Users are limited to three posts per day to encourage thoughtful curation over volume. Learn more on our About page.
Why can I only post 3 times per day?
We limit posts to encourage quality over quantity. When you can't post everything, you share what truly matters. This constraint helps combat the endless scroll of rage bait, spam, and low-effort content that dominates other platforms.
What's the difference between a post and a repost?
A post is when you share a link you've discovered with your own commentary. A repost is when you share someone else's Seabird post to your followers. Reposts can optionally include a "hat tip" to credit the original poster.
What is Original Work?
When you share your own writing or content, you can mark it as Original Work. This displays a quill icon on the post and adds it to the Original Work feed, creating a portfolio of your publications. Only users with the Creator role can mark posts as original work.
What are hat tips?
A hat tip is an optional credit you can give when reposting someone else's post. It appears as "Hat Tip: @username" at the top of the repost and links to the original. It's a way to say thanks and promote users who share great content.
Can I edit or delete my posts?
You can edit your commentary anytime, but links can only be edited within 15 minutes of posting. Links on reposts cannot be edited at all. You can delete any post permanently, but there's no undo.
What can I post links to?
Share links to articles, essays, blog posts, books, podcasts, videos, or any other worthwhile media. If it's on the internet, you can probably share it but the experience is optimized for article-like content.
How do likes and bookmarks work? What's the difference?
Likes are public and visible to everyone—they show appreciation and notify the post author. Bookmarks are private and only visible to you—they're for saving posts you want to read later. Both are unlimited.
Who can read my posts?
Your posts are public and visible to anyone who follows you on Seabird. If you've blocked someone, they won't be able to see your profile or posts.
What happens when I block someone?
Blocking works both ways: the blocked user can't see your profile or posts, and you won't see theirs. They cannot interact with you or your posts but previous interactions (likes, reposts) will remain unchanged.
How do notifications work?
You receive notifications when someone likes your post, gives you a hat tip, or follows you. Click the bell icon to see recent notifications. Notifications are automatically marked as read after you view them for one second.
How does Search work?
Click the search icon to find users. The Suggested tab shows recommended people to follow. The Search tab lets you search by name or username (requires at least 3 characters). The All tab shows everyone on Seabird. We don't currently support searching by keywords in the content of posts.
What analytics does Seabird collect?
We collect usage analytics to help maintain, debug, improve, and understand how people use Seabird. If you choose Anonymous Only in Settings, we continue collecting limited usage and operational data, but we do not associate it with your account.
