The funny thing about gift cards is that the recipient is almost never the purchaser. And when the recipient lives in a different state, they are never told that New York will secretly take their money after an arbitrary time period, even when a gift card explicitly states “funds never expire.” That’s a fun surprise the recipient learns years later.
