Maybe my whole project of trying to understand and empathize with authoritarians is really, or at least equally, me trying to understand and empathize with that part of my younger self, and with the parts of myself that arose to keep her alive and don’t always know whether they’re still needed.

My cognitive dissonance got louder than my survival instinct
By the time I’m done writing about The Exvangelicals: Loving, Living, and Leaving the White Evangelical Church I’ll have accidentally written my own disjointed, ADHD-as-hell book on the topic. Today, I want to talk about one line: “We’re not hurting because we didn’t follow the rules. We’re hurting because we did follow the rules.”
