Hospitals run by private entities will seek profitability regardless of their tax status as for- or not-for-profit. Competition and choice are key to making sure that, in the absence of government-enforced price caps, medical bills don’t skyrocket astronomically. Otherwise we should get a menu of prices at each hospital, so someone can decide before an emergency whether they want to enter the facility.
