Seems the friendship wasn’t unlikely at all, given their shared views at the time, classmate status at Yale, and similar midwestern roots. Politicians are social chameleons who radically shift their views or even their personal backstory to fit a new narrative or social group (ask me how I know). It’s just more damning in present times as the internet records and stores our interactions for far longer than most people would like.
