This Utah bar law takes the cake: Public bars were outlawed in Utah for 40 years. Until 2009, every bar in Utah could only serve alcohol to its “members” in order to be classified as a private club. Every club had membership fees: some annual, some for shorter durations. We must protect the Mormons from temptation (though apparently not the temptation of private clubs)!

Bartenders in Utah threw open their doors Wednesday as the state ditched a requirement that customers pay a fee and become a member of a private club before setting foot in a bar.
