I enjoy love and compliments as much or more than the next gal. But love and compliments are less finite than time and attention. That’s why we say people “pay” attention and “spend” time.

It’s still very funny to me that I don’t really listen to music anymore, but I do listen to five-hour podcasts about music. Then again, neither Bandsplain nor 60 Songs that Explain the 90s are about notes, arpeggios, or theory. The hosts talk about relationships, “the culture,” economics, and, very often, fame.
