Not to be dramatic, but absolutely to be only slightly hyperbolic, growing up in Evangelical Christianity was child abuse and reading about the Evangelical Christian church meant reliving my trauma.

content="I just read The Exvangelicals: Loving, Living, and Leaving the White Evangelical Church. It has been difficult. I kept going back and forth between it and Unruly: The Ridiculous History of England's Kings and Queens (10/10) to get a break. Not to be dramatic, but absolutely to be only slightly hyperbolic, growing up in Evangelical Christianity was child abuse and reading about the Evangelical Christian church meant reliving my trauma. I grew up in Southern Baptist churches. Considering how rampant child sexual abuse was and is in the Southern Baptist Convention, I was extremely lucky. But “wasn’t raped” doesn’t mean “unscathed.”"
