I’ve been seeing a lot of articles on the dire state of journalism this week, but none have impressed me as much as this 2010 article with a thoughtful discussion about government subsidies and the role of free press in sustaining democracy. One of many quote-worthy passages: “The moral of the story is clear: journalism and press subsidies are the price of civilization. To deliver this public good in sufficient measure to sustain democracy, it must be treated as we treat national security.”
