One thing that continues to surprise me about articles like this is that even when writers recognize the problems with "social media," they still take the basic format for granted. Maybe that reflects ineradicable demand for it, but I'm not convinced that any amount of tinkering around the edges like this is going to fix it, as fine as any of these suggestions might be.
